If you love seeing visitors have an amazing experience, a career in tourism could be for you! In this programme you will learn the knowledge and skills to support and deliver quality visitor experiences in the tourism and travel industries. You will develop your communication skills, learn how to manage tourism workplace practices, and gain an understanding of national and international tourism operating environments and tourism business systems.
As part of your programme you will visit tourist attractions to develop a greater understanding of what creates a great experience and how tourism businesses operate. Locations may include Rotorua - to visit places like Waikato Jet Squeeze, Agro ventures or rafting; Auckland - to visit Sky City and the Sky Tower; Rotorua - to see Mitai Village or Tamaki Village. You will also visit local attractions such as Zealong Tea Estate and Karapiro kayaking.
Wintec is an official City and Guilds approved centre. Our programmes have City and Guild programmes embedded in them, meaning that you'll not only be working towards an NZQA accredited qualification, you'll also be able to sit the exam for a City and Guilds qualification at the end of your studies. City and Guilds qualifications are recognised in over 100 countries around the world.
Graduates of the programme will have the skills and knowledge to work in senior supervisory or advisory positions in the tourism and travel industry. Roles may include tourism operations advisors, business development coordinators, trade development advisors and small tourism business operators.
Graduates have the opportunity to work all of over the world. Organisations such as IEP can assist with visas and work placements, including a 12 month USA option for graduates. As a student you'll also hear about other opportunities, such as the Disney Internationalal College programme Charlotte Tawhiti joined following her Diploma in 2013. The programme involved living in Orlando Florida for one year, seeing the principals she had learnt about at Wintec in action at the magical world of Disney and making lifelong friends from all over the world.
Upon successful completion of Tourism Management 5 students may enrol in the Bachelor of Applied Management with 120 credits transferred. This is equivalent to one year of study in the degree programme.
48 credits at NCEA Level 2 including 12 credits in English or 毛利, 10 literacy credits at NCEA Level 2 or above (5 credits each in reading and writing), and 10 numeracy credits at NCEA Level 1 or above; or New Zealand Certificate in Tourism (Level 4); or a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 4 or above; or equivalent
Other English Language Requirements:
A minimum IELTS Academic band score of 5.5, with no band score less than 5.0; or equivalent, and TOEFL IBT 46, TOEFL PBT score of 550 or Pearson score of 42.
