Adventure is about heading into the wild places of New Zealand and confidently using your skills, energy and determination. It’s about making good decisions so that you enjoy yourself, but come back safely. Outdoor Adventure gives you the opportunity to explore your own personal goals and the skills to start a career in an exciting, challenging and rewarding industry.
The majority of the programme is practical and you can expect overnight trips to many locations around the central North Island region. We have built up a strong team of experienced tutors and contractors who guide students in all aspects of Outdoor Adventure. Our tutors lead, motivate and inspire students to ensure their success.
Our course is ideal for people who are passionate about the outdoors or who want to gain confidence both in a personal and professional sense. The skills you learn are based in the outdoors, but are transferrable for many career ambitions. We attract many school leavers, people wanting a career change, and people who just want to follow their dreams.
Learn essential skills for surviving in the bush. You will go on tramps that take you to remote and inspiring places, sleep in mountain huts, tents or simple bivvies. Learn about plant and animal species, make fires, navigate and work as a team.
When the rains come and the rivers swell, you will have the opportunity to increase your kayaking skills. Start on flat water and learn the Eskimo roll, then progress to local and central North Island rivers to experience white water, negotiate rapids and carry out rescues.
You will spend at least one week on Mt Ruapehu learning the basic skills of moving and surviving in snow and ice, as well as how to avoid avalanches and what to do if you or another party get caught in one. Mountaineering is often one of the peak experiences of the certificate course, and will certainly leave you wanting more.
Learn the art of climbing. You will learn rope, technical and personal skills to keep yourself and a climbing partner safe in the vertical world, climbing faces that you never thought possible. Titahi Bay is home to Whitireia rock climbing, holding challenges for beginner and intermediate climbers. We also travel to Bearing Head for awesome bouldering, and experience the internationally recognised climbing areas of Wharepapa and Taupo.
Develop your skills in a sea kayak and explore the wild Wellington coastline. We use the stunning coast right on our doorstep, with offshore islands, cliffs, strong tides and surf beaches.
Adventure Based Learning
Learn games and problem solving activities that stretch your capacity to work as an individual and a team. You will start out as a participant and progressively learn how to run these sessions for other groups in the community.
Increase your self-awareness, confidence, and skills for living and working alongside people from a range of backgrounds.
