Learn safe working practices and gain a range of basic trade skills, qualities and attributes that will enable you to seek further training and/or employment in the construction industry.
The National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trade Skills (BCATS) has been designed specifically to provide a progressive pathway for you to integrate into a wide range of trade-related occupations.
You will develop a flexible approach to learning through a range of skills and activities, allowing you to make informed choices on the subjects that are relevant and appropriate to your needs and purposes.

Identify, select, maintain, and use hand tools for BCATS projects
Identify, select, maintain, and use portable power tools for BCATS projects
Demonstrate knowledge of and apply safe working practices in a BCATS workplace
Receive instructions and communicate information in relation to BCATS projects
Plan and monitor the construction of a BCATS project, and quality check the product
Demonstrate knowledge of the carpentry industry within a BCATS environment
Construct timber garden furniture and items of basic construction equipment as a BCATS project
Demonstrate knowledge of and create sketches and drawings for BCATS projects
Demonstrate knowledge of timber and other construction materials used in BCATS projects
The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Universal College of Learning (UCOL) Trading as Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is accredited to teach it.
This programme has open entry.
International student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS (or equivalent including TOEFL) score of 5.0 with no band score lower than 5.5.
