New Zealand’s recreation, fitness, tourism and sport industries are all quickly developing and a qualification in bicycle servicing will enable you to kickstart a career within these exciting areas.
This relatively new qualification provides a blend of online learning and practical block courses held in our fully-equipped workshop to enable you to fit your study around other commitments.
160 hours of work experience.
Small class sizes provide an excellent learning environment and work experience opportunities will allow you to get a great first foot in the door of industry.
Graduates could work in a range of bicycle store workshop and retail positions, or as specialist bicycle servicing providers, bicycle industry tourism providers or bicycle mechanics on professional racing teams. In addition, graduates could proceed to other aspects of the industry such as bicycle store ownership, bicycle import businesses, bicycle coaching and fitting or bicycle designing and building.
This qualification provides an excellent starting point for other industry-related positions within research, marketing, journalism or event management and is also a perfect pathway into further study with the New Zealand Certificate in Bicycle Mechanics (Level 4) being the logical next step to take your skills to the next level.
Pathways into the programme:
If you need to improve your English language skills, our New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2) will be the perfect place to start.
You will need to study online by distance for 10-12 hour per week and attend two, fortnight-long block courses (held at Otago Polytechnic's Central Campus in Cromwell). This equates to 30 hours per week. In addition, you will need to complete 160 hours of industry work experience (which equates to 40 hours per week) at any suitable bicycle workshop within New Zealand. The Programme Manager will assist you with finding a work experience placement/reference if required.

For applicants 20 years of age and over, there are no minimum academic requirements
If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.0 issued within the last two years with no less than 5.0 in any band, or equivalent.
In exceptional circumstances, an applicant under the age of 20 years who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme where they supply evidence of their ability to succeed on the programme.
