NE4676 - Diploma in Arts and Media (Contemporary Music) (Level 5)

- Play two songs on their principal instrument. These should be existing songs and be of contrasting styles. (vocalists may be accompanied)
- Sit a short theory test and aural test
- Perform some basic instrument skills, i.e. scales
- Talk for 60 seconds about their musical experiences and plans for the future.
- Drummers do not need to perform whole songs, but should be able to demonstrate a range of different grooves
- Demonstrate various rudiments
- Count in and play an 8-bar moderate rock groove
- Count in and play a contrasting 8-bar drum groove (any style) and include a 2-bar solo at bars 7 and 8
- Talk for 60 seconds about musical experience and plans for the future.

This programme extends beyond the Certificate to a level where you will have the elementary skills to manage a contemporary music band.
You will gain the technical skills and safe work practice habits required to produce contemporary music works in a studio, and in manage an independent contemporary music band.
Through this programme you will develop the ability to conduct research and critically evaluate your work, and gain an understanding of the issues relating to professional practice.
On successful completion of this programme, you will have sufficient skills and knowledge to seek employment in the Contemporary Music industry.
Throughout this, and the Certificate programme you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in performance, event management, as a sound technician and other roles during monthly performances in the on-campus Johnny Cash performance venue.
Musician: you could form your own band or play as a solo artist, getting gigs and promoting your self or working with an agent.
Sound Engineer: you’ll have the skills to operate a mixing desk and apply processing to create music tracks, voiceovers, sound effects etc. for music or screen.
Songwriter: put your creativity to work writing anything from hit songs to advertising jingles, film music to dance tracks.
Music Producer: call the shots and make artistic decisions to help artists deliver the musical results they want.
Session Musician: play your instrument as a gun for hire, working on recordings and live gigs, rubbing shoulders with a wide range of other musicians.
Music Teacher: you’ll combine your subject knowledge with people skills to pass on what you know to a new generation of musicians.
Music Management: your business and promotion skills will be put to use organizing and marketing fellow musicians and dealing with customers in the entertainment industry.
Studio Technician: an entry level position for immediately after graduation, setting up recording rooms, developing your skills and making industry contacts.
Live Sound Engineer: help a band to deliver their best sounding performance with a complete set of technical and artistic skills in sole charge of the mixing desk.
Broadcast Sound: record sound for television and radio, working in News or Entertainment, as well as postproduction editing and mixing.
There are no minimum academic entry requirements.
An initial discussion with the Course Coordinator may be required to assess applicants' individual motivation, commitment to, and suitability for the programme.
All applicants must provide evidence of a reasonable level of proficiency on their principal instrument, demonstrated by either:

English language requirements:
All applicants must have a standard of English sufficient to be able to study at the level at which they enter the programme. Those students whose first language is not English will have:
An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic Band score of at least 5.5 (with at least 5 in each component), issued within the last two years
An equivalent qualification.
