Get your building career off to a great start through this comprehensive certificate.
The popularity of this programme reflects the excellent employment opportunities for graduates.
Two strands are available.
If you are looking for a career in either the residential or commercial construction field, and enjoy working outdoors and pulling together big elements to build a structure, then the Carpentry strand is for you.
If you would like to work on panel products and the wooden components of buildings like stairs, kitchens, doors and fittings, if you have an eye for detail and working with precise measurements, the Joinery strand is for you.
The programme is supported by the Industry Training Association Building (ITaB) scheme and the BCITO.
As a graduate, you will be qualified to work as entry-level construction site workers, pre-cut factory workers, and in the retail sector of the building and construction industry.
You will learn theory, first aid and also practical skills including workplace training.
This qualification will assist you in obtaining an apprenticeship.
Career opportunities & pathways
Once you graduate, you will be able to follow safe working practices in a carpentry workshop and perform basic operations with hand, power and machine tools.
You will be qualified to work as entry-level construction site workers, pre-cut factory workers and in the retail sector of the building and construction industry.
This qualification will assist you in obtaining an apprenticeship and completing the practical requirements towards the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4).
You can complete your apprenticeship through NMIT as part of the NMIT Managed Apprenticeship programme.
Entry criteria
This programme has open entry.
English language requirements:
If you have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance, you are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.
If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below.
IELTS 5.5 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)
TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 20)
University of Cambridge English Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill
NZCEL - Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace, or Academic
Pearson Test PG&OHMJTI (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 36
City & Guilds IESOL - B1 Achiever with a score of 43
