Programme highlights
The National Certificate in Security is a flexible learning and work based training programme. It has been designed for people who are actively looking for employment in the security industry and is the initial requirement to move into a career in security.
You will learn the critical skills required in the security industry and gain the compulsory units required to work in the industry.

Having a formal qualification in this field can better position you in the security industry where there is a higher demand for quality education at all levels.
Programme structure
Students will receive tuition through online learning, flexible learning opportunities and on-site workshops, and will also have work-based training opportunities to gain both theoretical and practical skills and knowledge.
Students complete the following courses:
Introduction to Security
The purpose of this course is to demonstrate basic concepts of security, including personal presentation of a security officer; as well as relevant legislations and their implication to security officers.
Safety and Emergency Response
To prepare a security officer to respond in emergency situations including the use of first aid and hand held fire tools.
Communication Skills
The purpose of this course is to cover basic communication and customer service skills required by a security officer.
Security Operations
The purpose of this course is to develop operational knowledge and skills in observation and threat identification, entry exit controls and conflict situations for security.
Interpersonal Communication
The students will gain understanding of communication with people from other cultures, learn how to work in a team and complete routine tasks in a team group.
Security Staff Services
The purpose of this course is to prepare students for working with ‘crowd control’ and to liaise with other organisations in a security context
Further training or study
National Certificate in Security (Level 3 or 4) with strands in Event Security, Mobile Patrol, Retail Security, and Site Security
Study Method: 19 weeks of flexible learning time, tutorials and work based learning including 2 full days for workshops.
Entry criteria

Have English competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. An applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS Academic band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent.

Complete the form for Consent for Disclosure of Information for the NZ Police.
(Be able to hold a Security Guard Certificate of Approval or Security Guard Licence following a favorable vetting including a comprehensive background check and criminal activity report by New Zealand Police and Department of Courts for the past 5 years)
Provisional Entry
Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Faculty Dean.
