Turn your fascination for space into a career involving astrophysics and radio astronomy. High-performance computing and broadband networking is central to modern astronomy and space science. The Astronomy major in the Bachelor of Science has an applied nature with a strong grounding in computing and mathematics.
After building a base of knowledge in astronomy and physics, you explore the latest developments in astronomy and space science, spherical astronomy, celestial mechanics, theoretical astrophysics and mathematical physics.
AUT's Warkworth Observatory, which is linked to New Zealand's most powerful super computers, has two large professional radio telescopes - the only radio telescopes in the country. It enables AUT's Institute for Radio Astronomy and Space Research (IRASR) to receive and process enormous amounts of data from deep space, used for cutting-edge research in astrophysics and earth science. You have the opportunity to work with IRASR during your study.
Applicants must be 18 years old and have obtained a qualification equivalent to New Zealand year 13.
Preference will be given to applicants with one or more level 3 subjects from Calculus, Mathematics, and Statistics
Students who do not have the above background may be directed to take certain papers in their first year of study.

English Language requirements:
Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 overall with all bands 5.5 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 80; Computer-based: Total score of 213 with a minimum essay rating of 4.0; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with B/B+ grade; GIE with B grade; CAE minimum overall score of 169; PTE minimum overall score of 50.
