Learn more about China and Chinese culture, and develop advanced fluency in Chinese language in as little as two years with the Diploma in Chinese.
China is one of New Zealand’s biggest trading partners, and people who are fluent in Chinese are in demand in many companies. The diploma focuses on Chinese language acquisition, equipping you with the skills for everyday and workplace communication in Chinese.
What you study
In your first year you develop a base of linguistic competence in Chinese in both oral and written communication, together with an understanding of social and cultural aspects of China. 800 characters are introduced in Year 1.
This year you become familiar with complex language structures and specialist usage. You also gain skills for academic inquiry and independent research. A further 1000 characters are introduced. All Chinese papers are introduced in simplified Chinese characters.

Students who have secondary school qualifications in Chinese may be exempt from one or more papers at the introductory level and go straight into higher level papers, subject to a placement test. These students would then be required to make up the points with other papers.
NCEA: 48 level 2 credits including eight level 2 credits in any one subject from Classical Studies, Drama, English, Geography, Health Education, History, History of Art, Media Studies, Social Studies or Business Studies, Economics, Physical Education, Te Reo 毛利, Te Reo Rangatira
CIE: 60 points on the UCAS Tariff, including any one subject similar to the NCEA subjects listed above
Completion of Year 13 is recommended.
English Language Requirements:
IELTS (Academic) 5.5 overall with all bands 5.0 or higher; or equivalent; TOEFL iBT score of 70; Computer-based: Total score of 213 with a minimum essay rating of 4.0; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with B/B+ grade; GIE with B grade; CAE minimum overall score of 169; PTE minimum overall score of 50.
