    Summary

The Graduate Certificate in Health Science is designed for people without a degree, but with considerable professional experience in health, sport or recreation who wish to obtain a qualification in their field. The graduate is also suitable for prospective students who hold a degree in another discipline but do not meet the postgraduate study entry criteria.

Addiction is a complex problem that affects the physical and mental health of individuals and their families and impacts on the wider social environment. There is an increasing demand in the mental health and addictions workforce for staff who are co-existing problems (CEP) ‘capable'. They can undertake screening and brief interventions wherever the client presents.

AUT's Addictions pathway in the Graduate Certificate in Health Science equips students with the knowledge and skills to work effectively with people who have substance use and/or gambling related problems in a range of settings.

Who would the Addictions pathway suit?

    • The over-arching goal of the Addictions pathway is to provide students who have completed a relevant undergraduate major, or equivalent, with the knowledge and skills to commence or advance professional practice in addictions in a range of health and social settings in a New Zealand context.
    • This pathway would suit anyone who wants to be more skilled in recognising and working with clients who present with a number of issues including addictions.
    • The pathway has been developed to meet national addiction workforce standards and is taught in ‘blocks' of time to better suit those students in the workforce.
    • If you want to use the Addictions pathway to register as a practitioner with DAPAANZ (Drug and Alcohol Practitioners' Association of NZ) you will also need to hold an applied bachelor's degree in nursing, psychology, social work, medicine, counselling or closely similar. Applied in this context is defined as comprising a significant component of assessed clinical practice within the learning programme (equivalent to at least 120 hours practicum).

    Structure

The following papers are offered in the Addictions pathway of the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Health Science:
