The Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy papers are part of the Graduate Diploma in Health Science. This course of study is designed for health professionals, teachers, youth workers and individuals who have extensive experience of working with children and who have a strong interest in becoming a specialist Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist. The Graduate Diploma course of study is a preparatory programme that will provide in-depth knowledge of observational studies, infant and child development and a strong theoretical framework from which to progress towards the clinical component of this training.
Currently this is the only Specialist Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy training on offer in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Graduates who go on to further postgraduate clinical study with children and adolescents will be expected to apply for student membership of the New Zealand Association of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists, and under an interim scope of practice (working with children) with the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand.
What this programme covers
The pathway will provide you with a theoretical framework and a strong grounding in observational skills that are transferable for all types of work with children, young people and families. There will be opportunities to develop understanding of infant and child development via contemporary child development research including neuroscience and neuro-biology. There is an emphasis on developing an awareness of unconscious processes in the self and other and how these impact upon the nature of both internal and external relationships.
There will be an emphasis upon early human development and all students will undertake an infant observation whereby key foundation skills of specialist child and adolescent psychotherapy will be introduced. The emphasis will be on gaining an understanding of unconscious processes within intra and inter-personal relationships, and an opportunity will be given for the exploration of ongoing work with children from a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic frame of reference.
All of the papers on this programme of study are in line with rigorous international training programmes in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.

The Graduate Diploma in Health Science: Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy is designed to further develop and augment knowledge, skills and employability in the field of work with children, adolescents and families. It also provides a pathway to further postgraduate study in the area of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.
Applicants must have completed a bachelors degree or a relevant professional qualification or experience approved by the dean (or representative) to be equivalent to a bachelors degree.
English Language requirements:
Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
