    Summary

    Explore the art of fine food with AUT's new Master of Gastronomy. This multifaceted postgraduate programme takes an in-depth look into the study of food, food culture, food history and food politics throughout this multifaceted degree.

    Strongly influenced by New Zealand and the Pacific, this master's degree has been developed so that those with a strong interest in these areas can create their masterpiece.

    Enrolment in the course will advance your knowledge in the principles and history of gastronomy. You will be able to create new knowledge and critically evaluate information, whilst learning to communicate it effectively. Exposure to new media and technology will impact the way you develop your ideas and deliver your assignments.

    A team of experienced and passionate lecturers with extensive academic and industry experience will guide you through a multidimensional food journey.

    Career opportunities

    This programme opens employment opportunities within hospitality, tourism, media, food research, writing, general research, human geography and employment options requiring a background in food sociology/anthropology.

    Structure and content

    The Master of Gastronomy programme of study and research enables graduates to apply learned knowledge, cognisant of gastronomy's historical roots that are integrated throughout the programme's suite of papers.

    Pedagogical links are promoted within a learning and knowledge building nexus with six prescribed papers (including a methodology paper), as well as completing a choice of capstone paper, either the Gastronomy and Material Culture Project or Dissertation.

    On completion of the programme students may have the opportunity to progress towards PhD study.

    Entry criteria

    • Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree with a minimum of a B grade average or higher in papers at Level 7 or equivalent.
    • In exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet the requirements above, but who has an appropriate combination of academic and professional experience may be considered for admission.

    English Language requirements:

    Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
