WHAT IS IT LIKE?
The Graduate Diploma in Business is useful if you wish to keep up with professional developments in your field and are short of time. Or you may have found yourself working in a different field of business to that in which you hold a qualification.
This is an undergraduate diploma, designed for those who do not have a degree in the subject you wish to pursue. You do need to be a university graduate to enrol in this programme.
Why human resources?
Human Resource Management (HRM) is the process of managing the relationship between people and the organisations they work in. It is a specialist function supporting organisations, and their employees, at both strategic and operational levels. An understanding of HRM is also of benefit to anyone with responsibilities for managing people.
Massey University’s business and management studies rank in the top 250 (by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings). We are also ranked in the top 150 universities worldwide for business administration programmes by the Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
Learn from leading business experts
The Massey Business School is one of the country’s leading and largest business schools - it is ranked among the top two per cent of business schools globally and is AACSB accredited.
A focus on HRM
You’ll become part of one of the largest and most highly-respected management schools in New Zealand. Your teachers are world-leading experts, who have their own experience in the industry.
The importance Massey University places on human resources is reflected in our focus on research programmes, such as the Massey People, Organisation, Work and Employment Research (MPOWER) Group which drives collaboration between human resource professionals, academics and other stakeholders.
It is a flexible qualification, with no core or compulsory subjects. You can tailor your study to your interests or needs.
A major in human resource management enables you to pursue a wide variety of career opportunities. For a career in this area it is very useful to get some general business experience to help you understand better how organisations work, so if you don’t initially work in HRM this can still work to your advantage in the long term.
Graduates often take up generalist human resource positions in private companies or in the public sector. Others specialise in areas such as recruitment, training and development, and employment relations.
For those already working in the field, the diploma will give you additional skills and bring you up-to-date on theory and practice.
Massey University offers a comprehensive teaching programme in HRM. There are courses in managing human resources, employment relations, employment law, equal employment opportunity, management development, contemporary issues and organisational behaviour.
Students will acquire a solid understanding of the employment relationship and how to manage disputes, grievances, discipline and dismissals. We also offer a theoretical content, which provides a framework into which these ideas and techniques fit. This combination of theory and practice enables you to evaluate the ideas and relate them to your experience and to the activities of organisations. The Department’s teaching philosophy encourages links with business. Students will study contemporary cases.
