    Extend your Spanish experience

    The prestigious Master of Arts (Spanish) will advance your skills of analysis and expression in Spanish.

    WHAT IS IT LIKE?

    A Master of Arts (Spanish) will give you knowledge of Spanish language and the culture of countries where Spanish is widely spoken. It incorporates current methodological approaches to enhance your analytical tools to think critically about a range of subject areas in Hispanic studies, such as literature, translation and cultural studies.

    Undertake supervised research

    A key focus of the Master of Arts (Spanish) is supervised research in Hispanic literary and cultural studies. This is your opportunity to express your intellectual independence through a thesis on a topic that has captured your attention throughout your studies. You’ll continue to develop your language skills in Spanish and advance your ability to develop critical arguments in Spanish.     The Master of Arts (Spanish) is offered in distance mode, so you can fit your studies around your life. Your thesis will be individually supervised by one of our award-winning teachers and researchers, who will give you support and guidance every step of the way.

    Careers

    The most significant international language after English is Spanish; it’s spoken in more than 20 Latin American nations as well as in Oceania, Asia and Africa.

    Spanish is also spoken by more than 40 million people in the United States, where it’s the most important community language. This means that international demand for Spanish speakers and researchers is growing, with graduates working in areas such as international business and customer relations.

    The demand for Spanish teachers and academics is also significant.

    Master of Arts (Spanish) structure

    Courses to the value of 180 credits consisting of 90 credits of taught courses and a 90 credit thesis as outlined below.

    At least a B+ grade average is required in the first 60 credits of courses completed in Part One for progression to Part Two - Research Pathway.

    Students who successfully complete Part One but do not meet the minimum grade average for progression will exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Arts.

    This qualification may be awarded with Distinction or Merit.

    Entry criteria

    Admission to this programme is open to student who have:

    • A completed BA degree with a major in Spanish or
    • A completed Bachelor’s degree with a minor in Spanish followed by a Graduate Certificate in Arts endorsed in Spanish; or
    • A completed Bachelor’s degree followed by a Graduate Diploma in Arts in Spanish;

    Students must achieve at least a B average in their 200 and 300-level Spanish courses.

    Students who have completed the following postgraduate qualifications may be eligible for direct entry to part two of the Master of Arts:

    • A completed Bachelor of Arts(Honours) endorsed in Spanish with at least a B+ grade average or
    • a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts endorsed in Spanish, with at least a B+ grade average

    English language requirements:

    • IELTS score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
    • TOEFL iBT score of 90 overall (min 20 in Writing)
    • PTE Academic score of 58 Overall (min 50 in communicative skills)
    • Cambridge English score of 180
